First week of the football season

5th September 2019
It was a positive start for the new school football team this week, with a draw and narrow defeat in their first round of games.

Playing at West Pelton together for the first time, the team took a while to get used to each other’s playing styles as they fell three goals behind to the home team. After some half time soul-searching however, they came out reinvigorated for the second half and attacked the West Pelton goal relentlessly. After hitting the post - twice! - and seeing a goal-line header from Christopher somehow just miss the target, it was last year’s player of the season Alfie who took the game by the scruff of the neck by scoring two quick-fire goals. As the clock ticked towards full time there was time for one last attack, but the last shot of the game agonisingly crept wide after a deflection.

The team were determined not to let their heads drop however, and after only 5 minutes of resting they were back on for their second match, this time against Roseberry. To say the game was one-sided would be an understatement, as the team attacked at will and were denied once again by the post, some great goalkeeping, and at one point a ball that rolled along the length of the opposition goal line without drifting into the net! It was left to our new goalkeeper though to ultimately claim the team a point, as he tipped over a long range shot that was destined for the top corner late on.

So despite not winning either of their matches, everyone left full of confidence that next week’s games will deliver a very different result.
