The year 6s have been working incredibly hard recently as they embark on the final few weeks before their KS2 SATs. Their hard work and commendable attitudes are certainly paying off and they are really impressing Miss Coulson and me. As a reward for their efforts (and the fact that we won the attendance cup this week) we celebrated with well-deserved ice lollies in the sun on Friday afternoon.
Keep up the great work year 6- we’re all so proud of you!
We all really enjoyed learning about (and debating) the different theorist’s ideas about how living things have evolved over time. A theory that we studied in more detail was Darwin’s idea of ‘natural selection’ and how the ability to adapt to an environment is the key to survival. Luckily for us, Kibby has its very own expert on this theory, Year 4’s Jack. Whilst learning more about Darwin, Jack gave us his brilliant insight into his theory and really helped us all understand the key concepts of Darwin’s work.

Over the last half term year 6′s PE lessons were made of up dance and netball- both of which we really enjoyed. As a celebration of their hard work, they performed their routine in front of the whole school today.
The whole class really enjoyed working in groups to put together the choreography for this dance and I couldn’t of been more impressed. A special thanks to Robbie for suggesting that we add the mannequin challenge 5 minutes before the end of our last practice lesson- although it was a bit of a mad dash- I think you’ll agree that it definitely paid off!

Last week, Year 6 had some serious mathematical problem solving to do-trust me it was tricky and required lots of perseverance and resilience- 2 of the things that we are really focussing on this term.
The problem was a sorting activity where the class had to sort a range of numbers and number classifications so that they matched up in a grid format. The children worked in teams to do this and regularly came so close to solving the problem -often only being one number out- before needing to completely start again.
The quote of the week came during this activity when George said, “Imagine how good it will feel when we crack this!” In the end, 2 teams were eventually successful, with Neve, Joe C, Andrew and Jack only narrowly missing out to the great endurance of Robbie and George. The whole class massively impressed throughout the activity through their great attitudes, NEVER giving up and their ‘can-do’ attitudes!
Last week our class visited Woodhorn Museum museum in Ashington to look at the history of mining. This trip was a perfect follow up to our visit from ‘That History Bloke’ as we had touched on the life of a miner from learning about Tommy Young; it was great to learn about this lifestyle in more detail.
The morning started off with a trip to the fascinating archives where we got the chance to investigate the real inventor of the ‘Davy’ Lamp. It was so interesting to see the two different perspectives from Humphrey Davys and George Stephenson and how people’s perceptions of the two men differed because of their backgrounds. As a class we mostly came to the conclusion that it was actually Stephenson who probably invented the oil lamp.
After the archives, we had the chance to look at a Davy (ahem I mean Stephenson) lamp in more detail when we had the opportunity to sketch a lame for ourselves. During this activity we also learnt how we could show light reflecting by using metallic paint.
After lunch it was the part of the day we were all so excited for, we got to explore all of the authentic mining equipment across the museum. Having background information on mining (from That History Bloke) meant Year 6 had so many questions for our guide (Victoria), she couldn’t believe the level of maturity and the depth of conversation coming from our class- so much so that we actually ran out of time! Throughout our tour we had the opportunity to see: the pit lift system, how the shafts were dug out, what it would sound like to be in the pit, as well as hearing first hand from pit works from the 70s and hearing tragic real life stories about children in the pit in the 1920s.
Year 6 had an absolutely fantastic day; it was so great to learn about the mining heritage, particularly as we come from a mining village ourselves.

On Friday, years 5 and 6 had a very special visitor- ‘That History Bloke’- or Richard as we were allowed to called him.
Richard came in to put some local insight into our WW1 topic through introducing a local hero- Tommy Young. Year 6 absolutely loved hearing about how Tommy grew up from a young boy in a small mining village to single handedly saving 9 lives during a battle; the whole story was so inspiring.
Along with learning about Tommy, Richard also brought in realistic war memorabilia which he happily let the class look at in close detail. We all loved seeing many of the artefacts which we had been learning about in class in real life.
Year 6 absolutely loved all of the hands on activities of the morning, from learning to dress a wound, to correctly carrying a stretcher, marching in time with commands and finally…how could we forget Jai dressing up as a soldier- I’m sure you’ll agree that he really looked the part.
Not only was this morning so much fun, we all got a lot out of it and learnt so much. We are going to use Tommy Young’s story to film a news report using green green so keep an eye out for that.

So, it’s December and that means only one thing…rehearsals for the KS2 christmas show are underway…oh yes they are (sorry I couldn’t resist).
This year’s production is ‘Cinderella’s Got Nee Fella’. The cast are working beyond hard to learn their lines and work on their comedic timing for this super funny show.
I’m sure you won’t be disappointed- we all can’t wait you to see it!

We have absolutely LOVED learning about WW1 in our topic lessons- almost as much as we are loving reading War Horse. Year 6 have developed a real soft spot for Joey and have loved to read about the war from the alternative perspective of a horse.
Michael Morpurgo has always been a very popular author with the year 6s- in the past they have loved reading: The butterfly Lion and Long way home as our class text; this is why we couldn’t miss the experience of visiting the Morpurgo exhibition at Seven Stories.
The exhibition included information and original manuscripts from all of Morpurgo’s most famous texts- along with authentic artefacts which made the books really come to life. Obviously, our favourite section was War Horse- well next to the fact that we could try on Michael Morpurgo’s ACTUAL hat and coat (if you could get it off Joe that is)!
It was great to see Morpurgo’s writing process- from his notes, to the finished copies; it was particularly interesting to see how he re-drafts his work…just like we do!

The new mentoring program brings together our best and brightest from Year 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 to share ideas and work together to improve each other’s work. The mentors and Year 2 pupils will meet at least twice per week to look at developing reading, writing and maths skills. It has to be said thought that the pupils in Year 2 are already showing that they are very talented – that’s why they were selected for the program – and by working with their mentors we hope they can reach even greater heights.
The partnership doesn’t just benefit the Year 2 children though, as the mentors benefit from the opportunity to explain ideas and methods. By teaching and developing their Year 2 partners, they will also deepen their own subject knowledge and understanding, as well as feeling great as they know they will have helped someone else.
There are a number of rules attached to being a mentor, and all of the pupils who have agreed to take up this role know that they have very high expectations placed upon them, and falling short of those expectations is unacceptable due to the fact they are not only a mentor, but a role model to all pupils in school.

Our seven initial mentors are all looking forward to working with their partners and making a difference to their learning. If the initial launch visit to Seven Stories is anything to go by, the pupils in Year 2 are in safe hands.
