A Fire alarm practice got Year 2 asking a lot of questions:
Why do we have a practice fire alarm?
Why is the alarm so loud?
Why do we have to come outside?
Why is it important to walk?
Why do the teachers take a register when we are outside?
How do the fire brigade know if we need help?
How could a fire start in school?
What if I was at home and there was a fire?
Back in class we had a surprise visitor that was able to answer all of our questions.
Lisa from Birtley Fire Station shared her fire kit with us, it was really heavy!
We talked about the risks of fire at home and how to stay safe, our homework was to go home and check our smoke alarms.
After talking to Lisa we thought a firefighters job would be very active and a job that would need lots of fitness and exercise so we decided to take part in some drill run activities on our school yard.
While on our yard practicing hose runs and ladder runs a fire engine drove by!
The Fire fighters were able to stop and talk to us while they checked the village fire and water hydrants.
We were able to use the hose and squirt water all down the street, we even got to raise the ladders and sit in the front of the engine, we were not allowed to sound the horn or sirens but just as we were saying good bye they received a fire call and quickly set off with their lights flashing and sirens on!
What an eventful start to Year 2!
